HOW GODZILLA MADE ME A BETTER DAD

A Die Mighty Manifesto
By Steve “Coach Fury” Holiner
OS Lead Instructor, MFF Coach, Master DVRT, Master RKC

The Die Mighty philosophy and my life as a coach wouldn’t exist without my kids. My daughter and son are the reason I train. I train to keep up with them. I train to live long with them.

I train to be a role model for them.
My kids know that strength is important on a bigger scale than muscle growth or fat loss. Being strong is a state of being, a philosophy and way of life. They see that lifestyle in me and that makes me very very happy.

How do you think your kids see you? I don’t ask that to shame or judge. Hell no! I ask because I believe as parents, we are obligated to continually better ourselves for our kids. Is there something you want to change? Well then, what are you waiting for? Now I don’t mean we need to be perfect, I’m a galaxy far far away from perfect, but I do believe we should never settle, always be curious and always progress. We should always strive to be STRONG PARENTS!
By now you know that Godzilla is my spirit animal. My all-time favorite Godzilla film is 1967’s SON OF GODZILLA.

This film is packed with Kaiju (giant monsters), scientists messing with the weather and takes place on an exotic island. Most importantly, the movie has a few choice parenting lessons of Godzilla teaching his son Minilla (also known as Minya). The scene of Godzilla teaching Minilla how to breathe atomic breath struck such a chord with me at a young age and resonates with me to this day. Godzilla demonstrated how to perform a skill and let Minilla try on his own. Finally, offering some tough love, Godzilla stepped on Minilla’s tail triggering him to nail his first full-on atomic breath. Godzilla rewards his son and then promptly takes a nap. Solid parenting!
Godzilla also seemed to instill a sense of independence in Minilla. The son of Godzilla would often have to fend for his own but dad was always there when things got rough.

At the end of the film, Godzilla holds Minilla close as snow overcomes their island. That scene still makes me teary.
I know it sounds crazy, but I apply those lessons to how I teach my kids.

•I try to teach while letting them learn for themselves

•I’m teaching them to be independent.

•They know I love them and I'm there when they need me.

In turn, my kids are bright, caring, well behaved, curious and respectful.

Of course there’s much more to parenting than watching a Godzilla flick, but inspiration is inspiration. Simply by reading this, you’re already invested in being a better parent. Sadly, we have all seen some mediocre to crap parenting from others. I ask again, is there something you would change?
I want to live an incredibly long and healthy life. However, I take comfort in knowing that if I were to die tomorrow, my kids will already be far greater than I ever will. I take pride in my role as a strong parent because I choose to make changes. I choose to be strong. I choose to DIE MIGHTY!

How about you?

Happy Father’s Day to all of my fellow dad’s (and mom’s that rep the dad role)!

Thanks for your time!

ACTION JACKSON STEPS

A Die Mighty Manifesto
By Steve “Coach Fury” Holiner
OS Lead Instructor, MFF Coach, Master DVRT, Master RKC

The response to the Die Mighty launch piece, I WILL DIE MIGHTY, was overwhelming. It was an emotional experience for me to see it take off and hear how it struck a chord with so many people. First and foremost, I want to say thank you to everyone that commented, liked, shared, texted, bought a shirt or reached out to me in any way regarding Die Mighty. My goal is to get the vision of Die Mighty in front of as many people as possible. You're all making that possible. I appreciate the support!
I Will Die Mighty was easily my most popular self-published blog to date. Yet, there were zero mentions of kettlebells, crawling, sandbags or any specific exercise whatsoever. Why did it resonate?

Hope.

Die Mighty is about hope.

A hope to reclaim things we fear we’ve lost or see slipping away.

A hope to be better parents, lovers, or friends.

A hope to live to our fullest.

We need to have hope.

Now comes the reality check.
We also need action.

Hope is easily rendered useless without action.

Everyone hopes for a better life. Most of us will hope for that life and do absolutely nothing to make it a reality. Whether it’s fitness, relationships or your career, CHANGE DOES NOT COME WITHOUT ACTION.

Deeds not words my friends! We need to act upon our intentions.
Here’s the thing, I don’t want you to make a giant leap. I want you to commit to one small step. Let’s place one foot over the starting line and begin this journey. Big leaps can become easy falls. Small steps lead to consistency and establishing new habits. The glory is in consistency!

You need to make the first move here. You need to grasp the sword. You need to make the decision to start right now! Not tomorrow. START TODAY!

What’s your first action step?

Simple. Email me.

Subject: I WANT TO DIE MIGHTY

Together, we’ll take it from there.

I firmly believe we all want to Die Mighty. No one says life was better when they were weaker, in more pain, sicker or unhappy. Sadly, many of us will stay idle hoping for a change that will never come. Why? No action.

Grab the sword! Choose to be strong! Choose hope. Choose action!
Wherever you are reading this, I want you to *shout, “I WILL DIE MIGHTY.”

Email me. Let’s start making those positive life changes today!

Thanks for reading.

I WILL DIE MIGHTY

A Die Mighty Manifesto
By Steve “Coach Fury” Holiner
OS Lead Instructor, MFF Coach, Master RKC, Master DVRT

We all come to fitness with our own agenda, our own stories and our own goals.

For many, you will be looking to lose weight, or get bigger muscles, or a combination of both.  In my opinion, those are absolutely legitimate ambitions to have. As your coach, I will do whatever it takes to safely, efficiently and intelligently get you the results you’re looking for. Together we will slay whatever dragons try to stop you from being your best self. With trust, patience, and consistency, we will meet your agenda.

And destroy it!

You’ve already done something remarkable. You’ve done what millions of people don’t do and won’t do. You’ve taken the first step by investing TIME into fitness. Whether you signed up for a gym, personal training, classes or a yoga mat at home, you have taken the most crucial step of any race… you crossed the STARTING line.

What about the millions of folks still waiting on tomorrow?

 “I don’t have the time.”

“I don’t have the money.”

“I’m too old for that.”

“My back hurts.”

We all have our own agendas, stories and reasons for NOT getting into fitness. I get it. I do. Been there. I was stuck allowing age and injury to govern my being until I found my own agenda to train. My why.

I revised my story. I crossed the starting line.
What set me on this path?

My daughter. One day, my back and right shoulder started to hurt while carrying her on my shoulders. She was only 6 months old and couldn’t have weighed more than 25 pounds. Right then and there, I decided I needed to be a strong dad. For me, it wasn’t about getting lean or jacked. It was about being a healthy and capable parent for as long as I possible can. I wanted to be a role model. I was not going to allow myself to fall apart and submit to aging the way most do.  To quote Henry Rollins lyrics:

“I don’t wanna die in the Wreck-Age. I don’t wanna go down in the Wreck-Age.”

I now have two kids in elementary school. I’m in my mid-40s and I can still carry them on my shoulders, play and keep up with them. I am strong for my kids. From the bottom of my heart, I believe that we parents are obligated to be strong for our kids. Being a parent is a great responsibility. To switch up Spider-Man’s classic line:

With great responsibility, comes great power.

We all need to tap into that power. My unexpected journey into strength has led me all over the United States and around the world. I have learned, met, worked with, taught and become friends with many wonderful human beings. Over the years, my training and life philosophies have coalesced. Training and life are not separate entities. Strength is all empowering in every facet of our life. If I can embrace strength and fitness in my life, anyone can.

I am not an athlete. I am not physically gifted. I am you. We are the same.

I will help you lose weight. I will help you put on muscle and lift heavy things if those are your goals. Yet, there is so much more to strength.

Now I want to SHARE what strength has done for me.

Here it is everyone! My agenda. My philosophy. My dream. My mission!

I want you to be 95 years old at Disney Land with your great-great-grandkids and not need a scooter. No kids? Great. Hit ALL the rides without fear of falling or getting hurt. I want you to live a long and vibrant life.

I don’t want you to live strong. I want you to DIE MIGHTY!

When my clock is finally up, I want to walk myself into my own grave.

We all have a choice as to how we live.

I choose to be strong.

I WILL DIE MIGHTY!

Where am I going with this? Die Mighty is the Tao of Fury and my training philosophy. With the support of my family at Original Strength, I am going to share my Die Mighty training principles, concepts and ideas with you through blogs, online training, videos, courses and books. I’ve worked with hundreds of trainers over my career, now I want to make myself more accessible to everyone.

We all know someone that could use fitness in their life. Maybe it’s your mom, a brother, a friend or the face in the mirror. Die Mighty will work for them and you. Please share, like, comment and spread the message to anyone you think we can help.

I will meet you at any level. Together we can change your life for the better. But you have to cross the starting line and invest time in yourself to do it. Be that strong parent. Be that strong partner. Be that strong you!

The coffin comes to us all. How we live between now and our final moment is on us. Will you be bold enough to grasp the sword and fight for every moment with those you love? Or will you sit back and go quietly into the night?

I will Die Mighty.

Will you?
